Earth Day needs to be Earth Year

We should make Earth Day a year round event. Although it has migrated to becoming a week, we can do better. Now let me go complete my ENVS 400 assignments.

Earth Week Challenge

I challenge you, the reader and myself to use reusable containers like the one in the picture, for water instead of buying bottled water for a week.

Should Humans Be Considered A Natural Resource

I may be going off subject, but something has to be done about homelessness. In the same night, I walked pass these two homeless human beings near 8th ave @ 39th Street in midtown Manhattan, New York.

This beautiful garden is located in the Flatbush Brooklyn, New York community, located at Lefferts Avenue and Washington Road. It contains potted plants, semi-peaceful outdoor lounge space, and some veggies.

Earth Day Challenge

I'm feeling much better now so I will start blogging again. I'm trying to decide on a challenge that readers can participate in for a week beginning on Earth Day 2012.

The finished product.

Here is a better version of the tree the 'Winter King Hawthorne' I planted on March 28, 2012. You can see I laid red wood chips around the base. I bought the chips from King's County Nurseries @ 625 New York Avenue @ Rutland Road in Brooklyn, New York.

Let's create a Medgar Evers garden club!

My goal is to acquire an abandoned space, beautify it with plants (like this one) and dedicate it to Medgar Evers.

Only A Matter of Time: Eco-Terrorism

It knew it was only a matter of time before "Eco-Terrorism" starts to manifest itself in pursuit of desperate measures to prove religious points. According to the Hindustan Times, Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra in South Asia (India), the Middle East and North Africa is expected to be ground zero for the tools as weapons of mass destruction. The conflict of course will be between terrorists groups and usually the government. The water in those countries are used for drinking, agriculture, and other human creature comforts. Terrorists will unfortunately implement terrorism on an easy target in response to an entity they have political or religious issues with.

The Active Environmental Student

The average environmental student would bypass this litter. I noticed this litter on the steps at Grand Central Station, NYC and decided to pick it up and take these bottles to recycle myself.

Ideas To Promote Environmentally Ethical Practices

Most people talk about recycling and do to some extent, but it is still not enough. I want to think of some ways we can have a lasting affect in the minds of the humans that will hopefully promote the practice of sustainability to the subconscious level. Please help me discover some ways.

Idea -1

The tree in the picture above was planted on March 28, 2012. As I was planting, both college peers and staff stopped in curiosity. I believe it may have been the fact that usually an older person or the school engineering staff usually performs activities like this and to most is a normal site. However, when a student in uniform, such as me performs a task, people seem to think differently and examine a little more as to why I am planting a tree. This type of action can and has served as a catalyst for others to join. I am going to continue this trend with the hopes of people joining the bandwagon.

The Invite To "Green" Enlightenment

Hello to you, the reader. Since the age of 9, I have always been interested with the planet and the human effect on the planet. My first science project consisted of growing a plant inside a sealable bag, which fascinated me. Now that years have past I've changed my academics goals which mainly revolved around science. First, I wanted to become a medical doctor. Second, I wanted to become an astronaut. Recently, during the last couple years, I narrowed my overall academic and career goals to be environmental science based. Currently, I am a student majoring in environmental science. Though I was majoring in environmental science and completed the environmental science courses I have taken successfully, I was reluctant to call myself an environmentalist. By definition, an environmentalist is one who overall supports political and ethical movements that seek to protect the quality of the natural environment through changes in harmful human activities according to Wikipedia. I love that definition but I would like to expand the definition and say that we seek to protect and enhance the natural environment by putting an end to harmful human activities that damage the planet and adopting habits the will have a positive effect in addition. Now that I not only practice environmental science for a grade, I do it as a hobby when time permits. I'm just getting into the "groove" of things and will increase my interests and hobbies in order to promote environmental awareness, protection, and conservation. I'm not the most knowledgable person when it comes to environmental science but I do have a willingness to learn and I invite you the reader to join me on my journey to learn more about the environment and what we can do to save our planet. Please, comment on anything I have to write and express your opinions in a respectable manor. Now let's get to saving the planet!
